Summer ushers in a 12-week whirlwind of summer camps for children ages 5-12.
A Summer Lead Camp Counselor is responsible for working as part of the field team to successfully deliver summer day camp programs in service of the Schoolhouse mission.
As a lead camp counselor, you are responsible for:
- leading a camp group of children,
- mentoring and providing feedback for counselors and CITs (counselors in training),
- communicating with Schoolhouse staff and camp parents,
- modeling Schoolhouse values,
- and ensuring the physical and emotional safety of participants.
This position begins May 14th and runs through August 23rd.
Include but are not limited to:
- Safeguarding the physical, emotional, and intellectual safety of campers and students – model Schoolhouse values, engage all participants (in their group), deliver consistent and exceptional supervision of children, patiently process conflict and disagreements
- Participation – participate in all aspects of programs in accordance with Schoolhouse methodologies including the active engagement of participants as a good example and role model at all times – play the games, sing the songs, wade in the river, hide in the leaves, build forts, and actively participate in all aspects of programs
- Communication – establish trusted lines of communication with participants, their families, and other Schoolhouse staff
- Providing exemplary adherence to Schoolhouse’s values, policies, and procedures
- Activity creation and delivery– partner with the Site Supervisor to create and implement high-quality, exciting, nature-based activities and schedules for camps
- Program preparation and upkeep – participate in training and staff meetings, prepare materials, set up and breakdown program materials, and clean and maintain program spaces
- Setting an excellent example in teaching and behavior management methods, work ethic, and attitude
- Serving as a resource, as needed, to other Schoolhouse staff (e.g. area of special knowledge or interest)
- Mentoring staff through giving and receiving feedback
- Serving as Camp Leader including leading games, telling stories, behavior management, staff and CIT mentorship, time management, and creating a culture of physical and emotional safety
- Participating in marketing/promotional strategies and Schoolhouse events as requested.
- Professional Development Plan – working with your supervisor to design and implement a professional development plan, including continuing education and familiarity with best practices

Bonus points (or at least a high-five) if you have…
- A college degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a relevant field (e.g. biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, botany)
- Teaching experience
- Summer camp experience
- A strong interest in/knowledge of plants, animals, geology, ecology, and/or cultural history
- Knowledge of experiential and inquiry-based learning techniques
- Additional skill-based training or certifications (Lifeguarding, EMT, etc.)
- English/Spanish bilingual fluency
Summer Lead Camp Counselors report to the Program Coordinator in Durham, the Orange County Site Manager in Orange, or the Wake County Site Manager in Wake.
A formal review will be conducted by the supervisor to establish and assess progress against employee goals. Ongoing feedback provided through regular supervision and work plan development/review sessions.
Office Location, Hours, Travel
The Schoolhouse of Wonder office is currently located at 2634 Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, Suite 220, Durham, NC 27707.
The work of the Durham Summer Lead Camp Counselor is typically performed at West Point on the Eno Park, 5101 N. Roxboro Street, Durham, NC 27704.
The work of the Orange County Summer Lead Camp Counselor is typically performed at Brumley Forest Nature Preserve, 3223 New Hope Church Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
Travel to off-site locations is occasionally required.
Regular hours typically fall between 7:30a – 6p Monday through Friday during Summer Camp from June through August. Hours are dependent on organizational needs, and typically total between 40 and 50 hours per week. Occasional weekends and/or evenings may be required.
The wage for this position is $12.00 per hour. Benefits include professional development opportunities, unlimited vitamin D, and a steady stream of (mostly funny) stories.
