On Sunday, July 6, Tropical Storm Chantal brought massive flooding to the Eno River and our beloved Durham parks overnight. Families lost homes, businesses, and irreplaceable treasures. Schoolhouse was hit hard too.
For the first time in our 36-year history, we were forced to cancel 10 weeks of summer camps, totaling more than $200,000 in lost revenue.
We are deeply grateful to our families, staff, and community partners who showed incredible flexibility and care as we relocated about half of our displaced campers to other Schoolhouse locations. These transfers, generous families, and an innovative local grantor helped cut the initial losses by more than half.
Regrettably, we’re still facing a $85,000 deficit this year. For a nonprofit of our size, that’s a serious challenge and we humbly ask for your support at levels that we haven’t asked before.
