Our very first Brumley Campout was a wild success! During the day campers ran through the forest trying to kick the can and snuck around searching for hiding spots and magical items. We were lucky enough to find some snakes this week including a big black rat snake and a queen snake! Once we got to the overnight, we used some excellent teamwork to set up our tents, cook dinner over a fire (garlic bread, salad, and spaghetti), and fall asleep to the (some might say loud) sounds of nature! Unfortunately, almost all of the pictures from this week were lost. You can check out a few that survived to see a tiny glimpse of our week!
Praying Mantis was a fun-filled and busy three days! Our campers had a chance to play some classic Schoolhouse games like Sock Wars and Dragon’s Egg where they got to be sneaky and silent or goofy and loud (throwing socks at each other gets pretty silly!). Creek time was a favorite for many campers who got muddy, found crayfish and clams, skipped rocks, and cooled off! We had some luck looking for animals, including a baby northern water snake. Viney Village was another highlight as campers climbed and swung around. Take a look at our photo gallery to get a glimpse into our week!
Our first even Teen Adventure Camp was a huge success! The campers enjoyed wilderness exploration with a small crew and WONDERful staff. They gained expertise in fire-making, played a few games, and found a big turtle. We hope our teens had a blast, and we hope to see them return again as campers, CIT’s, or even counselors in the future!
Our Wild Plants and Herbs campers had a busy week full of all kinds of nature. Of course, like every week, we enjoyed the woods and creeks of Umstead State Park, but this week we dug a little deeper into all that Nature has to offer us. We learned about plant identification and put those new skills to use making our own jewelweed skin balm. We even experimented with some natural blueberry dyes (with some…mixed results…). We had a blast and learned some new things along the way. Take a look at our photos to see some of the fun!
