If you’re wondering what your camper has been up to this week, here are some questions to get the conversation started…
- This week’s theme is growth rings. Which growth rings are you hoping to accomplish by Friday? Which, if any, have you accomplished so far?
- Since Monday we have been to several interesting locations to participate in activities including Dino, Salamander, Sunshine Hill, and Crystal Mountain. Which location has been your favorite and why?
- In-between working on our growth rings we have played several games such as werewolf, kick the can, and contact. How do you play each game? Which game is the most difficult? The easiest? Which one did you enjoy playing the most?

- This week’s theme is Native Ways and we have been learning about Native American traditions and culture. What are some different kinds of Native American homes and what was the reason behind each type of design?
- We start every day of camp with a morning circle and a special ceremony that we borrowed from the Native Americans. What is the ceremony called? What was it originally used for?
- You have learned about six different kinds of plants that are commonly found in our forests. Two of them are even edible! What are some of their names? How do you identify them?

Backcountry Adventures Photo Gallery
Adventure was the name of the game at Umstead State Park this week. Our fearless campers learned about all kinds of skills associated with exploring the backcountry. We learned about water filters, shelters, and cooking fires, as well as various kinds of handy knots. Some campers took the opportunity to work on Growth Rings as they perfected their skills in the fields of Plants, Snakes, Fire, and Whittling. No week of camp at Schoolhouse of Wonder would be complete without critters, and we were not disappointed. Along with a myriad of bugs and birds, we spotted a black rat snake and a few tiny turtles! We enjoyed creek-time each day; rock-skipping was a favorite pastime for many. Take a look at the photos below to see some of our adventures!
