Our campers had a frightfully fun week out at Harris Lake County Park, doing everything from building monsters to learning about fire to finding native critters! We kicked off the week with some gardening work at Schoolhouse of Wonder’s adopted garden where campers and counselors worked with park staff to tend a small plot. We painted and carved pumpkins, and even cooked up the pumpkin seeds over our campfire. Campers learned how to build fires and the importance of respecting fire. We found a bunch of critters, including frogs and toads, and even a rough green snake! We played games and whittled and had a wonderful time enjoying every moment of our shortening days together. Our Earth Art campers had a delightful week exploring artistic wonders of the natural world at Harris Lake County Park. They experimented with using different bits of nature like pine needles and pinecones to create paintings, sculptures, mobiles, forts, and more. Some even made a miniature island nation using all natural materials. We learned about fire-building and perfected our rock-skipping techniques. We took some time for classic Schoolhouse activities like whittling, games, and looking for critters. We enjoyed some of the last warm days of the year together enjoying the outdoors. Take a look at our photo gallery to see a small glimpse of our awesome week!

Our first spring camp of the year brought us all kinds of springtime magic. From rain and cold to sunshine and daffodils, we had it all! Not even the unpredictable weather could dampen the spirits of our wild hut-builders. We worked together to build two awesome shelters, made a fire, and even tried some pine needle tea. We played some Schoolhouse classics like Beckon, Werewolf, and Scout Mission and went on an “Amber Hunt.” Our hopes of seeing some wildlife were not disappointed. Among other things, we saw a fence lizard, a green anole, a bald eagle, and a bunch of turtles. It’s safe to say that our spring season is off to a wild start!

What do you do when your “spring” camp brings you snow? Build a fire and roast some marshmallows, of course! And what do you do when your theme is about mythical creatures? Build fairy houses, troll bridges, wizard staffs, and fairy wands! We did all that and more out at Whispering Pines this week. We filled our days with whimsical stories about all kinds of creatures, from fairies to trolls. We got loud to fight (and defeat!) the Windigo and quiet to listen to the sounds of nature and birdwatch. We explored and named new places around camp, like Crystal Mountain, Salamander, and Dino. And of course we made time for some classic Schoolhouse games and whittling practice. It was a delightful and imaginative week. Check out our photos below!
