Schoolhouse of Wonder families and friends,
Thank you for another spectacular summer together! We hope you soaked up the sun, explored the woods, befriended Piedmont creatures, refreshed in the rivers and creeks, and above all, had fun building connections in nature.
I’m writing to share an extraordinary opportunity. We’ve been selected by Jack Johnson’s charitable organization to participate in their All At Once campaign.
All At Once is a social network which promotes individual actions to create and support healthy communities and planet and believes that when these individual actions are multiplied by millions, we can create global change.
As part of this campaign, Jack Johnson will match up to $2500 of donations made to Schoolhouse of Wonder between now and October 31st! Please double the power of your gift by donating to Schoolhouse between now and Halloween.

Let’s send off this summer season by opening the door for even more children to get dirty, tired, and happy in outdoor field trips and camps throughout the whole year. We thank you for the fabulous memories and look forward to making more together.
With Appreciation,
Gretchen Gehrke
Chair, Board of Directors

If it can be thrown, launched, chucked or tossed, we did it this week during Primitive Projectiles camp! On this adventure-filled journey through time we explored many innovations on projectiles over human history. On Monday we started off throwing rocks, then we moved on to slings, spears, atlatls, tomahawks, and archery as the week went on. After spending lots of time on target practice, we still managed to tell stories, play games, and splash around in the Eno River. We also found a ton of forest and river critters throughout the week, including box turtles, crayfish, insects, minnows, toads, and water snakes. What a great way to kick off the fall season! We hope you enjoy these fun pictures from Primitive Projectiles.

Our Treehugger campers lived up to their name this week, spending the week learning about native trees, making nature journals featuring trees, creating leaf rubbings, and even adopting their very own trees on Thursday. They also did some eclipse-viewing, learned a bit about map-making, and had the opportunity to make necklaces to help them remember their adopted trees. They saw a bunch of critters including a northern water snake, frogs, and crayfish, and spent some down time working on their whittling skills. We did, of course, make time for some classic Schoolhouse games like Scout Mission, Windigo, and Six Feathers. It was a tree-riffic week!
Our Otter campers had an exciting and busy week, jam-packed with everything from eclipse-viewing to game-playing, to critter-finding, to story-telling. They learned a bit about otters, and also found a bunch of other animals including a northern water snake, catfish, toads, a fishing spider, and many millipedes. They played both sneaking and running games and enjoyed hearing stories while they hiked the forest. Take a look at the photos below to see why we ended each day dirty, tired, and happy!
