Our Growth Rings campers had an exciting and action-packed week as they honed their skills in fire building, plant identification and use, whittling, and snake identification and interaction. Campers worked hard and many earned growth rings to recognize their hard work. When we weren’t working on growth rings, we played games, built forts, sang songs, splashed in the creek and looked for critters. It was an exciting and educational week. Take a look at the photos below to see some of the fun!
This week at Schoolhouse was a thrilling literary adventure full of tales of nature and battling the elements. We read excerpts from classic books like “Hatchet,” “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “Tuck Everlasting” and more. We used these stories as jumping off points for a variety of different games and activities. We also enjoyed water time each day, splashing about and looking for critters like crayfish. A special and unique week, take a look at the photos below to see some highlights of our week together!
What would Heron week be without a game of Heron Egg! Our campers loved the game, and many other activities as well. We spent some time bird watching and enjoyed the summer heat by the creek. The counselors shared stories about the Heron Family and demonstrated what kind of sounds the Heron makes. Take a look at the photos below to see how we ended each day dirty, tired, and happy!
Our Skink campers had an excellent week full of hikes, log-rolling, critters, games, and more! We spent our time together exploring all that Umstead State Park has to offer. We hiked the trails and searched for bugs and animals and some of us even got to touch a black rat snake! We heard stories and sang songs. And of course we took time each day to cool off in the creek. Take a look at the photos below to see how we ended each day dirty, tired, and happy!
Earthworm campers had a pretty awesome week filled with plenty of adventures. They ran through the forest, hid behind trees and snuck around while they played some classic Schoolhouse games like Scout Mission and Werewolf. Creek time was a hit and many campers had a great time splashing around, making mud creations (including getting themselves muddy from head to toe), and looking for critters (including one of the biggest crayfish we’ve ever seen in Brumley Forest!). That wasn’t the only critter we found – we were lucky enough to see a rough green snake, some salamanders, some praying mantises, and a queen snake! We finished out the week climbing vines, making earthworm habitats out of bottles, and whittling. Take a look at our pics to see what our week was like!
Our Orienteering week was a blast as campers practiced using a compass and reading maps, culminating in camper teams completing our very first Brumley (mini)-orienteering course! We weren’t sure how it was going to go, but every team was able to find all of the checkpoints – even more impressive when you realize a checkpoint is a simply marked tree somewhere in the forest! When we weren’t practicing our navigation skills we were busy playing some classic games like Windigo and Werewolf, climbing vines, and whittling. Creek time was another highlight as campers splashed, got muddy, and looked for critters (including a baby Northern Water Snake). Take a look at our photos to get a glimpse into our awesome week!
