Some children come into the world primed to become artists, computer whizzes, or athletes. But these intrinsic qualities are only a small part of the story. Achievement often requires countless hours of practice to build the skills necessary to succeed.
Leadership is no different. Even “born leaders” require years of observing, learning, and practicing skills and qualities such as positive attitude, integrity, confidence, humility, empathy, communication, cooperation, teamwork, and the willingness to try new things.
Counselors in Training (Summer Camp)
The application for 2019 Counselors-in-Training has closed.
We are passionate about helping young people become their best selves. The Counselor in Training (CIT) program is one way we continue to nurture kind, curious, and confident teenagers.
Throughout each camp week, CITs have structured and unstructured opportunities to observe and learn from our skilled and dedicated camp staff as they support younger campers to explore, play, and discover the wonders of nature. Whether serving for a single camp week, a month, or something in between, each CIT will create a plan for personal development, receive real-time performance feedback anchored in the Schoolhouse core values, and participate in a weekly coaching session to assess their individual progress and opportunities for improvement.
We understand that each CIT comes to this experience with their own strengths, weaknesses, and life experiences. Our staff are committed to meet each CIT where they are and to work together to develop essential attitudes, knowledge, and skills.
Specifically, we aim to increase:
- leadership capacity
- demonstration of accountability
- capacity to enter the workforce
- Age: 13-17 years old (must be 13 by August 31, 2019)
- Cost: $199/week (CITs are eligible for multi-camp discounts, but not sibling discounts)
- Participants in the CIT program are also eligible for scholarships. Scholarship information can be found here.
We aim to match interested teens with the weeks they prefer, but occasionally there are capacity limitations. To best address this situation, we ask CITs to submit applications that include the maximum number of weeks they would like to enroll and all weeks they are available for. We’ll review applications and availability before sending out CIT assignments – what weeks teens are invited to CIT. At that point, CITs can be officially registered online.
Applications for 2019 Counselors-in-Training are open from December 3rd, 2018 to February 18, 2019.
- To apply: Complete the online CIT Application by February 18, 2019.
- Assignments: We will announce CIT assignments by March 4, 2019.
- Payment: Registration and payment are due by March 25, 2019.
Acceptance into the CIT program is contingent on the participant’s ability to attend required training on May 19, 2019.
For Counselors in Training who have time available during intersession breaks or Discovery Day dates, we offer a less structured leadership training opportunity. Current CITs may volunteer to take part in our seasonal camps without a formal evaluation. They will still receive verbal feedback and personalized goal setting assistance.
- Age: 13-17 years old
- Must have previous CIT experience at Schoolhouse
- Cost: None
- To apply: Call 919-477-2116 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss dates
- Assignments: We will discuss assignments on a case-by-case basis
Junior Counselors (Summer Camp)
Once again, we’re thrilled to offer employment opportunities for Junior Counselors in each summer camp session. Young leaders who have participated in our Counselor in Training (CIT) program are integral partners in pursuing this mission. In 2013, we created the Junior Counselor program – paid summer camp positions for former CITs – and it has been a great success.
Candidates are encouraged to apply for either summer session depending on their interest and availability. Junior Counselors are limited to working only one session during the summer season and will be expected to work the entirety of that session. Junior Counselors must be at least 16 years old by the beginning of the preferred session.
Important 2019 Dates:
Session 1: June 17 – July 19, 2019
Session 2: July 22 – August 23, 2019
Acceptance into the Junior Counselor program is contingent on the participant’s ability to attend required training on May 18th and 19th, 2019.
The application period for 2019 Junior Counselor positions has closed.
