Schoolhouse of Wonder offers 13-16 year olds meaningful opportunities to discover their own leadership style and practice needed skills in the caring and respectful environment of our award-winning outdoor day camps.
Some children come into the world primed to become artists, computer whizzes, or athletes. But these intrinsic qualities are only a small part of the story. Achievement often requires countless hours of practice to build the skills necessary to succeed.
Leadership is no different. Even “born leaders” require years of observing, learning, and practicing skills and qualities such as positive attitude, integrity, confidence, humility, empathy, communication, cooperation, teamwork, and the willingness to try new things.

Summer 2023 Counselor in Training Program
We’re making some changes to how we get our intrepid and dedicated teens signed up for our Counselor-in-Training program! In 2023, we’re helping you get your whole family organized for next summer by allowing you to register your CITs directly. Our hope is that this change will allow families to get campers and CITs registered for the weeks they need without having to wait and put other planning on hold.
CIT registration opened January 10th, 2023 along with spring and summer camps. We’ll still ask your teen to share some information with us about their goals and experience (through a form in Ultracamp), but it won’t be required at registration. That’ll let you register for the weeks you’re looking for right away, and come back later with your teen to complete the information. We are asking families to register their CIT for a maximum of 4 weeks. If your teen is interested in more than four CIT weeks, just let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org. If we have additional space, we’ll reach out to interested CIT families in March.
Use this link to register for our CIT program.
Counselors in Training (Intersession and School Break Camps)
For Counselors in Training who have time available during intersession breaks or Discovery Day dates, we offer a less structured leadership training opportunity. Current CITs may volunteer to take part in our seasonal camps without a formal evaluation. They will still receive verbal feedback and personalized goal setting assistance.
- Age: 13-16 years old
- Must have previous CIT experience at Schoolhouse
- Cost: None
- To apply: Call 919-477-2116 or email email@example.com to discuss dates
- Assignments: We will discuss assignments on a case-by-case basis
Junior Counselors (Summer Camp)
Once again, we’re thrilled to offer employment opportunities for Junior Counselors in each summer camp session. Young leaders who have participated in our Counselor in Training (CIT) program are integral partners in pursuing this mission. In 2013, we created the Junior Counselor program – paid summer camp positions for former CITs – and it has been a great success.
Candidates are encouraged to apply for summer sessions depending on their interest and availability. Junior Counselors typically work only one session of the summer season and preference may be given to folks who can work the entirety of a session. Junior Counselors are 16 and 17 years old and must be at least 16 years old by the beginning of their preferred session.
Important 2023 Dates:
Session 1: June 12 – July 21, 2023
Session 2: July 24 – August 25, 2023
Applications for 2023 Junior Counselor positions are now closed. If you’re interested, please reach out to us to see if we have any late availability.
