Leadership Training FAQs

If you’re thinking about our Leadership Training program, please read through our Leadership Training FAQs below.

If you still have questions, please feel free to call us at 919-477-2116 or email us.

What will my CIT be doing all day?

For a large part of the week, a CIT will be in a single camp group and will be participating in all of their fort building, whittling, creek explorations, and games. They’ll be active in all aspects of their camp group, but with a new leadership-based perspective. Each week, our CIT Mentors also lead CIT specific meet-ups and gatherings for CITs to connect with each other, debrief their experience, offer support, and brainstorm camp group ideas!

How do you help develop leadership skills?

We help each CIT create individualized goals related to leadership skills and help them decide what Schoolhouse tasks might provide the perfect level of challenge. Maybe it’s connecting with a small group of campers? Maybe it’s telling the directions for a game to an entire camp group? Maybe it’s tapping into their experience and helping demonstrate how to safely whittle or how to play Beckon? Wherever your teen is at, we’ll support them in balancing fun with growth and pushing their leadership skills a little bit beyond their comfort zone.

Can my child become a CIT even if they are not yet 13 years old by the beginning of summer camp?

In order to participate in the CIT program, your child must turn 13 by August 31.

How many weeks of summer camp must my child participate in to be a CIT?

We do not have a minimum number of weeks, so you can register for a single week if that’s what works for you. We do recommend multiple weeks for a richer, more impactful experience.  Your child must attend and complete our CIT summer training day (usually held on a Sunday afternoon in May) before participating in summer camp as a CIT.

Can my child be a CIT during school break or track out camps, outside of the summer season?

We do reserve a limited number of CIT spots for our school break and track out camps. These are awarded on a first come, first serve basis, and the only requirement is that your child must have already participated as a CIT in our summer program (and have already completed CIT training).

Does my child need to have been a camper at Schoolhouse to participate in leadership training?

No! While many of our CITs have been Schoolhouse campers, CITs and Junior Counselors are not required to have attended Schoolhouse camps to apply.

How do I get my teen signed up for your CIT program?

Families may register their 13-16 year old for CIT weeks directly through Ultracamp. Click the Register/My Account at the top of the page and create an account for you and your teen. You’ll be able to register for 2023 summer CIT weeks beginning on January 10, 2023.

How many weeks can I sign up for?

We ask families to sign their CIT up for a maximum of four weeks. If you’re interested in more than four weeks, please email us at schoolhouse@schoolhouseofwonder.org. If we have additional space, we’ll let CIT families know in March.
