The Hunt is On Photo Gallery

Although our week was shortened due to Hurricane Florence, we made the most of our time together. With our desire for adventure leading the way, we set out to discover all we could throughout Umstead State Park. We made maps and looked for treasure and we were not disappointed! We found countless nature treasures and critters galore. Forest games, whittling, and fort-building rounded out our time together. Take a look at the photos below to see what our week was all about.

Hurricane Florence Updates

,

We’ve been monitoring the weather forecast for Hurricane Florence and the projections show the storm impacting our area later this week. As always, the safety of our participants, their families, and our staff is of utmost concern.

Due to the projected hurricane conditions, we have decided to close our Wake camp on Thursday, September 13th and Friday, September 14th as well as cancel the Durham Discovery Day scheduled for Friday, September 14th. 

We wish everyone the best and hope that you remain safe throughout this weather event. 

PS – If you’re looking for activities to do when you’re cooped up inside or even without power, ask your kids! Schoolhouse classics like Poison Dart Frog, Mafia, Wax Museum, Beat Master, or Dragon’s Egg can be adapted to indoor versions pretty easily. We’ve even heard about an indoor family Sock War! Maybe a little whittling with a pocket knife or potato peeler and that bucket of sticks your child has in the garage?

 

 

Pinecone Photo Gallery

Our Pinecone campers had a delightful and wet week exploring the pine forests of Umstead State Park. All the rain we had brought out tons of toads and frogs and we learned the safest, gentlest ways to catch and hold these critters. The rain also brought out a full spectrum of fungus that lit up the forest with all kind of brilliant colors! When not exploring the trees and trails, we played some classic Schoolhouse games like Eagle Eye and Beckon. We whittled and built forts, and took time each day to splash around and explore the creeks and tributaries. Take a look at the photos below to catch a small glimpse of our big week!

Opossum Photo Gallery

Our Opossum week was a great finale to the summer! Campers enjoyed fantastic weather as they rambled and romped through Brumley Forest. Farmer Jones and Heeton the alien challenged campers to sneak, run, and explore the forest in Kick the Can and Scout Mission. We got to steal feathers, throw socks, and run for it in a few other classic Schoolhouse games like Six Feathers, Sock Wars, and the ever-favorite Park Ranger. It was a great week for wildlife and we got to see, and sometimes touch, two tiny northern water snakes, a big northern water snake, a baby snapping turtle, a box turtle, a dozen amazing caterpillars, crayfish, and fungi in about every color of the rainbow! We got muddy in the creek, climbed in the vines, whittled and built forts- check out a few photos to get a glimpse into the fun we had!
