This week in Acorn camp was awesome! We made crafts from nature, such as leaf crowns, leaf rubbings, and paintbrushes. We played classic Schoolhouse games like, Kick the Can, Werewolf and Dragon’s Egg. Along with games and crafts, there was some tree-climbing, snake wrangling in the Eno river and fort-building at our base camps. This week was fun-filled with a wide variety of activities for all kinds of campers. Here are a few photos that showcase our wonderful week.
Learning about simple machines has never been better! Campers got to try their hand at throwing tomahawks and atlatls (a primitive hunting tool) and feel the advantage of leverage at work for them. They also saw the power of pulleys and wheels inside the 250 year old grist mill here at West Point on the Eno park. Along with forces and motion, they played classic Schoolhouse games like Six Feathers and Windigo and floated the Eno River. Check out a few photos from our wonderful week.
Cottontail, cottontail, hopping down the Brumley trail! Our Cottontail campers had a fantastic week as they got to explore the forests, fields, and creek spots at Brumley Forest. Games were a highlight of the week with campers finding three magical objects in Scout Mission, pulling tails and stealing feathers in Six Feathers, and hurling socks at each other in Sock Wars. Creek time was a favorite for many campers, especially The Deep Spot – a new creek location for nearly all of the campers. Creek time was filled with campers who liked to splash around, dunk bodies, belly flop, catch crayfish, get muddy, and skip rocks. They even got to see (and touch!) a Northern water snake! Whittling and storytelling filled any remaining time, as campers heard about how the turtle and coyote came to be the way they are. Our Cottontail campers had a great week cram jam full of adventure and fun. Check out our photo gallery to see a glimpse into our week!
Arrow Dynamics was so fun it really flew by! –pun intended 🙂 Our Arrow Dynamic campers learned all about archery and shooting technique before getting to practice. Campers picked up the tips and techniques and made a great improvement over the week! Archery wasn’t the only fun part of the week though. Creek time was a highlight, with campers enjoying catching cray fish and salamanders, skipping rocks, finding some great ‘clay mines’ and having some very wet and wild splash wars! Campers also had a great time playing some classic Schoolhouse games like Six Feathers, Scout Mission, and Werewolf. Whittling and crafting things like bows, arrows, and swords filled up any free time we had. Check out our photo gallery to get a glimpse into our archery week!
AH-COW? More like AH-WOW! Boy, can these campers whittle! We spent this week honing our wood-working skills and creating some unique projects. When not whittling away the hours, we spent our time playing games like Six Feathers, building forts, splashing around in the creek, and catching critters like toads, turtles, and snakes. It was another great Schoolhouse week! Take a look at the photos below to see how we ended our week dirty, tired, and happy!
Our Hummingbird campers had an exciting time at Umstead State Park this week! We learned about different bird calls and hung hummingbird feeders to help us spot our tiny, flitting friends. We explored the forest and were able to see tons of new fungus, thanks to all the recent rain. We got to touch snakes, build forts, whittle sticks, and play a few classic Schoolhouse games. But the biggest hit of all was water time. We used nets to catch critters, built houses and ponds for the minnows and crayfish, and splashed around. Take a look at the photos below to see how we ended our week dirty, tired, and happy!
We really lived up to our theme this week in Forest Jamboree camp! We sang songs, played “normal” instruments and even created our own. We learned a bit about the songs of the forest and about how animals communicate with varying tones, pitches, and rhythms. We interrupted our concerts long enough to play a few classic Schoolhouse games like Windigo, and spent a little time each day splashing in the creek. And of course, we enjoyed finding a bunch of critters, including snakes, crayfish, skinks, and toads. It was an exciting and full week. Take a look at the photos below to see how kept the forest jammin’!
Salamanders, centipedes, stag beetles, oh my! Our Millipede campers experienced a whirlwind of critters and adventures this week. We explored Umstead State Park through the trails and waterways, looking high and low for nature treasures and we were not disappointed. We built forts at our base camp and made some mud art during creek time. We ran and hid, playing games like Beckon and Eagle Eye, and practiced whittling with potato peelers. It was a fun week for campers and counselors alike. Take a look at the photos below to catch a small glimpse of our big adventures!
This week in Inchworm camp we made new friends, explored the forest and waterways for critters, and played both hiding and running games. But the real wow of the week was the many incredible forts we built. Some forts were 30 feet long, some had multiple rooms, and one even had a fireplace! Check out the great times we shared this week in our photo gallery.
