This week of camp was dedicated to finding adventure, and we did! The beautiful fall weather led us to plenty of animals including a river cooter (turtle), two box turtles, a red spotted newt, a rabid wolf spider carrying her babies (don’t worry, she’s harmless), and plenty of crayfish and clams. We were lucky to have a freshly downed tree provide us with plenty of wood for whittling and making bows and arrows. Our adventuring wouldn’t have been complete without learning about maps & compasses, exploring new areas of Brumley Forest, and practicing our slack-line skills. Games were a hit, especially our multi-day saga of The Sailors versus Grey Beard. We had a great time and hope you’ll check out our photos to learn more about our week!
This week we learned all about what you need to stay alive in the wilderness and different survival skills. We gathered dew and dug a solar still for water and built debris huts for warmth and shelter. We practiced fire building skills and lighting matches and got to try out steel strikers and a bow drill. Our fire skills culminated in cooking ‘snakes’ over the fire, which were delicious! When we weren’t practicing surviving, we were busy setting a record for Brumley snakes! We caught two rough green snakes, two northern water snakes, a black rat snake, a red-bellied snake, and a queen snake! We got muddy, climbed vines, whittled, and played games in the forest – it was a week jam-packed with fun! Check out our photos to catch a glimpse into our fun week.
From the deepest of roots to the newest of buds, we learned all about trees this week. We learned about different native trees and explored the eco systems our trees provide. We found critters of all kinds in that eco system, including snakes, toads, turtles, and more. We spent plenty of time playing forest games like Six Feathers and Beckon, and even made some time to work on crafts like tie-dye. It was an excellent week of fall camp at Umstead State Park. Take a look at our photos below to see some of the fun!
Games, games, and more games! We tried our hands at games that tested our communication, our balance, and our cooperation as a group. We ran through the forest, splashed through the Eno River, and found some critters along the way. Along with new games and activities, we played a few of our tried and true classics like Six Feathers, Glactigo, and Dragon’s Egg. Here are a few photos from Wild Games Bonanza week.
Survival has never been more fun! This week, we were a band of shipwrecked sailors who had to brave the wild land along the Eno River. We made shelter, ate edible plants from the forest, and built a fire to roast dough boys, topped with hand made butter. In addition to our wrecked ship predicament we played a few of our favorite games, such as Six Feathers, Sock Wars, and Scout Mission. The week was complete with water time in the Eno River, wading with the turtles and wildlife. Enjoy a few photos from our week in this photo gallery.
