This week, we focused on developing our skills in a variety of areas, including whittling, fire-building, plant identification, snake-handling and more! We kicked off our week with some tips for safe whittling and soon were off on the hunt to find cedar and other kinds of ideal whittling woods. The search for good whittling sticks led us on the search for good tinder and kindling, as we learned about different methods of fire-building. Our daily forest hikes became filled with looking for snakes, and learning about the native and edible plants. As much as we loved building upon our naturalist skills and achieving growth rings, we made sure to include plenty of water time to cool off during our hot days. We even got to try some rock-jumping, and hiked out to Sennet’s Hole. Even with all that, we managed to squeeze in a few classic Schoolhouse games including Six Feathers and Windigo.
This week in Beaver camp was a blast! Campers enjoyed making nature crafts like bird feeders from pine cones, and painting wooden snakes. The adventure continued with some forest exploration that included rolling over logs to see whats hiding beneath. (There’s a whole world under there!) We also had good luck finding a number of animals throughout the week– a few water snakes, frogs, and painted box turtles around the Eno…no beavers yet, but fingers crossed for next time. All and all a great week at camp.
Our week began with some exploration of our base camps. We built forts and fairy homes and hoped some critters might move on in! We enjoyed some silly games like Doxeneye and Bum Bum Bum and some sneaking games like Beckon and Eagle Eye. At water time we enjoyed cooling off in the river and creeks and peeking under rocks to see what creatures were lurking around. We found turtles and crayfish, and even made boats to float down the waterways. The camp days were definitely busy–check out the photos below to catch a small glimpse of our big week!
Crow campers got to really shine this week. From making art work, like decorating bandanas and making a banner for our all-girl camp, Luna, to preforming skits, throwing tomahawks, jumping into the river from the big jumping rock and playing their hardest during games, these young men got to try it all. On Thursday Crow joined Luna camp in a camp out where they preformed skits for the each other then had a special treat– twilight water time in the Eno River! Each day was an adventure and the Crow campers met the challenge everyday head on!
Luna camp was a spectacular week. From team-building activities to playing games to decorating a banner for our brother camp, Crow, we celebrated and empowered one another to be our best selves! Along with celebrating, we tested ourselves by throwing tomahawks, and jumping off the big jumping rock into the river. The week culminated with a camp out on Thursday night. We unveiled the Crow banner and performed a skit or two before having twilight water time in the Eno River. It was a great way to finish the week, dirty, tired, and happy.
