Our Moth campers had a delightful week exploring the creeks and trails of Umstead State Park. We spent our time playing forest and field games, practicing whittling with potato peelers, hearing stories, and building some epic forts. We even saw some cool critters! Check out the photos to see some of the fun.
In this week of mapping and tracking, campers explored the tallest peaks of the forest and lowest beds of the creek using their newly developed navigation skills. We discovered how to use compasses and maps and looked into how scat and animal tracks can play a role in understanding our directional abilities in nature. The amphitheater map we created took us on woodsy adventures and allowed us to see so much amazing wildlife. Take a look at the photos below to see the fun!
Our campers this week embarked on an exciting, old-timey adventure. We spent our time learning about things the pioneer might have done, including animal tracking, fire-building, butter-making, cooking in a dutch oven, and more! Of course, no week at Schoolhouse would be complete without a few critters (snakes! snails! slugs! oh my!), plenty of games, and some muddy creek time. Check out the photos below to see some of the fun.
Our bushcraft campers spent the week learning some skills to help them find the essentials for survival: food, water, and shelter. We had a great time collecting dew from the grass, learning about edible plants, building shelters, and practicing fire building with steel strikers and quartz or a bow drill! When we weren’t practicing our bushcraft skills we were busy playing some awesome rounds of games like Winidigo, Werewolf, and Scout Mission. Making survival bracelets, whittling, and creek time were other highlights of the week, not to mention finding plenty of great critters like a queen snake, crayfish, some awesome caterpillars, and millipedes! Whether it was raining or sunny, we were having a blast in Brumley Forest! Take a look at our photos to see some of the fun!
Our Raccoon campers had a great time this week exploring Brumley Forest! Campers got to discover great hiding spots and run wild through the forest playing games like Werewolf and battle it out in an epic (and silly!) game of Sock War. Creek time was another highlight for many campers who got plenty muddy, hunted for crayfish and salamanders, built dams, and splashed like crazy. Any extra time we had was filled with whittling, climbing and swinging on the vines, and discovering some of the best sticks and rocks in the forest. Check out our photo gallery for a sneak peek into our week!
