Tree-climbing, critter-catching, fort-building and more! Owl camp was full of adventures of all kinds. We caught fish and spotted snakes while splashing in the river. We played a ton of fun games, and learned all about the animals of the forest. We identified animal tracks, practiced the art of camouflage, and went on a senses scavenger hunt. Check out our photo gallery to see a glimpse of our amazing week in Owl camp!
Seeing, smelling, hearing, feeling, and even TASTING the forest in all new ways was the great adventure of the week. Through sensory scavenger hunts, activities on perspective, and edible plant walks, we interacted with the woods in new ways! Of course, this didn’t stop us from also playing huge games of Six Feathers, Werewolf, and many other Schoolhouse classics. We caught snakes in the river, faced our fears at jumping rock, and even learned some primitive fire skills. Here’s some moments of our amazing week!
This week in Young Backpacker camp we discussed a few essentials for learning to backpack, like different types of maps, how to pack your backpack properly, leaving as little impact as possible, and shelter-building. The rain was a great challenge for testing our shelters. Along with working on new skills, we also played a few classic games like Windigo, Six Feathers, and flashlight Werewolf during the camp out. We learned how to build a fire from wet wood and made a few tasty treats too!
This week was wet and wild in Treefrog camp. We saw a number of grubs, toads, and snakes. The animals loved all the rain and so did we! The river swelled which revived our creeks, allowing us to explore new waterways. Along with water exploration we played a bunch of games, climbed trees, built tarp shelters, forts, and made paper plate tambourines. Whether running through the forest or making arts and crafts in the shelter, the rain and thunderstorms couldn’t dampen our excitement.
We had a great week exploring Umstead State Park together. We studied the life cycle of frogs and were lucky enough to see them in various phases of that life cycle while exploring the creek and forest. In addition to frogs and tadpoles, we also found a variety of spiders, some crayfish, and even got to touch a northern water snake! We rambled through the woods and built structures like forts and bridges. Many campers also worked on their skills in areas like whittling, snake identification & handling, fire-building, and plant identification. Some campers earned Growth Rings for their achievements in those areas. And of course, no camp week would be complete without a bunch of games. Six Feathers was a favorite for many campers. It was an interesting and fun week. Take a look at the photos below to see how we ended our week dirty, tired, and happy.
We had a very fun week learning all about the wild plants & herbs and their incredible properties! Campers worked on their identification skills, sampled some edible plants like autumn olive and wood sorrel, made some plant presses, and even made some leaf rubbings. We learned all about essential oils and the different properties they have and used them to make some custom bite & sting soother. We infused sunflower oil and combined it with beeswax and essential oils to make custom chapstick! While weren’t working on our plant knowledge, we were busy playing games in the forests and fields like Six Feathers, Beckon, and Bear Salmon Mosquito. We got to see a lot of critters including a great blue heron, toads, skinks, and of course plenty of crayfish! Whittling, crafting, and storytelling filled any time we had left. Check out our photo gallery to get a glimpse into our week!
Dragonfly campers had a great week filled with games, stories, and plenty of animal sightings! Our campers ducked, dodged, ran, and hid during some classic Schoolhouse games like Six Feathers, Sock Wars, Beckon and more. Creek time was a fantastic way to cool off and campers splashed hard, skipped rocks, got muddy, and caught plenty of crayfish (or crawdaddies, depending on who you ask!). True to the name, the dragonflies were really out this week zooming around the pond. Campers also got a chance to see a box turtle, toads, a baby snapping turtle, millipedes, and a ringneck snake. Fort building, whittling, climbing at Viney Village, and storytelling filled any free time we had left. Check out our photo gallery to get a glimpse into our awesome week!
