We had a blast working on our whittling skills this week! When we weren’t whittling, we used our sticks to create beautiful forts complete with their own gardens. The cooler, wetter weather also brought out all the local salamanders and lizards. Our campers loved safely catching and getting closer looks at these wonderful animals. Check out these pictures to see all the cool things we found and created!

From learning to use a compass to setting up a tent, campers learned all the essentials to set out on their own backpacking trips! Another highlight of our week was catching a feisty Northern Watersnake down at the creek. It seems like the colder weather brought out Umstead’s reptiles as our group came across multiple turtles. Atl atls, archery, a blow dart gun, and tomahawks defined our week of Primitive Projectiles, and wow did we have fun! The campers supported each other everyday by rooting each other on to hit the targets. They even made up what hitting each part of the target represented, and everybody aimed to “take home the bacon.” Outside of projectiles, campers enjoyed catching critters in our insect nets and roasting marshmallows on a cold morning. Check out these pictures to see your campers in action!

Our campers were real troopers this week in the cold weather. We stayed warm with morning campfires, afternoon hot chocolates, and epic games of pinecone hockey! This group also loved jumping into big piles of leaves and pinestraw. And we got to do all of these things with a background of beautiful fall leaves. Enjoy these pictures of your campers having a blast!
