Although it was one of our wettest weeks yet, our Turtle campers had a great time whether they were in the forest, creeks, tents, or barn. During our drier times we played some classic Schoolhouse games like Beckon, Six Feathers and Kick the Can. In our wetter times, we played games like Poison Dart Frog, Beat Master, Little Sally Walker, and Down by the Banks. Campers also got to try their hand at different crafts like fortune tellers, god’s eyes, and friendship bracelets. Plenty of rain also meant plenty of fun in the (slightly higher) creek! Catching crayfish, skipping rocks, looking for other critters, building dams, and getting into some serious splash fights were just a few of the ways we enjoyed ourselves. While it was raining, campers got to hear plenty of storytelling from our staff including both fictional stories (Brer Rabbit, Penelope, Jack and his Pods) and true stories from our counselors’ lives. It was a wet one for sure, but also definitely a fun one!
We’ll be honest, it might not have been the best week for fire making and shelter building 🙂 Campers did get some time to make debris huts early in the week, and many of the huts stayed dry in the rain (a great test of craftsmanship!). We didn’t get to all of our fire activities, but campers got to learn about fire making techniques and practice building their own fire pits and structures. Games were a huge hit with this group both in the forests and fields and in the tent and barn. We had a great time running (and howling) during Werewolf and Six Feathers and we kept our spirits high with rainy day games of Pranksters, Little Sally Walker, and Codebreakers. Creek time was another favorite time in camp with plenty of rock skipping, critter hunting, exploration, and splashing around. It was a wet one for sure, but also definitely a fun one!
Raccoon camp was a blast! Between running, hiding, sneaking, and can-kicking, our campers learned the joy of playing with honor and the benefit of brushing up on your camouflage skills. They sang songs, listened to stories, built forts, and hiked all over Umstead State Park. No Schoolhouse week would be complete without plenty of time splashing in the creek, and water-time was a favorite activity for many campers. Not only did the creek provide some much-appreciated cooling off time, but also gave us the opportunity to find a myriad of critters. We found plenty of crayfish, a few frogs, some slugs, and even the occasional skink. Take a look at the photos below to see how we spent our dirty, tired, and happy week together!
Whether searching the forest floor for critters or building rock structures in the creek, our Newt campers had a blast exploring Umstead State Park. We learned a bit about amphibious habitats and built our own forest habitats (forts!). We sang songs, listened to stories, and learned the basics of whittling with potato peelers. We played a bunch of different games, like Dragon’s Egg and Beckon. And no week at Schoolhouse would be complete without catching a few crayfish and a few snakes! It was a fun-filled week. Take a look at the photo gallery below to see how ended each day dirty, tired, and happy!
If you learned about the water cycle, visited a new creek spot each day, learned to play with honor, and whittled with a potato peeler, you might have been a camper in Summer Streams. This week we focused on the wonders of water, including learning about water filtration, tributaries and creeks, and much more! Of course, we took time to play some classic Schoolhouse games, like Scout Mission and to look for critters. (We were not disappointed!) It was a wet and wild week! Take a look at the photos below to see some of the fun.
Adventure was the name of the game at Umstead State Park this week. Our fearless campers learned about all kinds of skills associated with exploring the backcountry. We learned about water filters, shelters, and cooking fires, as well as various kinds of handy knots. Some campers took the opportunity to work on Growth Rings as they perfected their skills in the fields of Plants, Snakes, Fire, and Whittling. No week of camp at Schoolhouse of Wonder would be complete without critters, and we were not disappointed. Along with a myriad of bugs and birds, we spotted a black rat snake and a few tiny turtles! We enjoyed creek-time each day; rock-skipping was a favorite pastime for many. Take a look at the photos below to see some of our adventures!
